Phillies thrash Yankees in Game 1 of World Series

91847792TL002_Los_Angeles_DThe New York Yankees were playing in their new home stadium with expectations high that they would bag their 27th title, but that didn’t faze the Philadelphia Phillies, who dumped the Yankees 6-1.

With pitcher Cliff Lee pitching in a brilliantly unpredictable manner and Chase Utley getting two homers, the Phillies stole homecourt advantage.

“He was great tonight,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said of the Phillies pitcher.  ”He kept us off balance.”

Lee joined the Phillies in the middle of the season in a trade with the Cleveland Indians.  He received the 2008 AL Cy Young Award.

The Phillies seek to win the World Series two straight years.  They won it last year over the Tampa Bay Rays, 4-1.
