Deaths were reported in at least eight Indian cities.  The death toll is highest in Pune.  According to reports, some 15 patients are still undergoing treatment in various hospitals in Pune.

There are nearly 4,000 cases of the H1N1 infection in India.  Schools and cinemas, which are normally frequented by people, were ordered to temporarily close for fear of a larger outbreak of the disease.  Many of India’s confirmed cases of swine flu have been among people who have returned from overseas travel.

The virus is thought to have killed more than 1,700 people around the world.  The swine flu (H1N1) virus first emerged in Mexico last April and spread to many countries.
