Lt. Assaf Ramon, 21, who became an Israeli air-force pilot earlier this year, died when his F-16 fighter jet crashed in the West Bank during a routine training flight.
Military officials said the crash occurred in a mountainous area south of the city of Hebron.
Israeli TV reported that an unidentified Palestinian saw the plane flying low over the southern West Bank minutes before it crashed into a huge fireball.
The young fighter pilot was the son of Israel’s only astronaut, Ilan Ramon, who was one of the seven astronauts on board the space shuttle Columbia that exploded during re-entry in 2003.
