Cannabis Cafe opens in Portland, Oregon, first marijuana cafe in U.S.

cannabis cafeAfter Obama’s administration’s relax policy on the use of marijuana for medical purposes, the first marijuana cafe has opened up in Portland, Oregon.

Cannabis Cafe is the first cafe in the U.S. to offer certified medical marijuana to patients who are registered to use the drug.

Users at the cafe can have marijuana and smoke it, given that they are not seen by the public.

The cafe is open to any Oregon residents who have an official medical marijuana card and a member of Oregon’s NORML, a group campaigning for the legalization of marijuana.

Madeline Martinez, executive director of Oregon’s NORML, has this to say, “This club represents personal freedom, finally, for our members.”

“Our plans go beyond serving food and marijuana. We hope to have classes, seminars, even a Cannabis Community College, based here to help people learn about growing and other uses for cannabis.”

In Oregon, patients who are registered to use the drug for medical purposes are about 21,000.  Marijuana is prescribed by doctors for various illnesses, including diabetes, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s and Tourette’s syndrome.
